  A. Hi Dorota,

  Thank you for your question. The most popular formula to use is the Kaytee Exact Hand Feeding Formula for all Baby Birds. It is important that you have a routine whilst hand feeding your Cockatoo. Your Cockatoo will need feeding every couple of hours feeding until the crop is full or nicely rounded or until the chick refuses to eat any more. It is important to keep a record of how much your Cockatoo eats and your Cockatoo's weight regularly to make sure that he or she is not losing weight. With a feeding schedule it allows the chick's crop to empty or nearly empty before the next feed and determines if the bird is being fed the right amount. This prevents any food remaining in the crop too long and possibly spoiling. If the time between the crop emptying suddenly increases and the crop appears to be slowing down, observe the chick closely. You may need to speak to an Avian Vet.

  For the first two days of your chicks life from when they hatch he or she should be given 1 part Kaytee to 6 parts water.

  2-5 days of the chick's life - 1 part Kaytee to 2-3 parts water

  5 days to weaning - 1 part Kaytee to 1.3-2 parts water.

  Parrots usually start weaning from 8- 12 weeks of age depending on the species. If you egg is of a Smaller Cockatoo such as a Galah,Goffin or Ducorps weaning would start around 8 weeks of age.

  Medium Cockatoo's such as Lesser Sulphur Crested, Citroen Crested, would be at around 9-10 weeks.

  Large Cockatoo's such as Umbrella Cockatoo, Medium Sulphur Crested, Greater Sulphur Crested aka Triton or a Moluccan Cockatoo would be at 11-12 weeks of age.

  Feeding Instructions Feed mixture with a clean, disinfected syringe or spoon.

  Dispense food along with the chick's feeding response ( bobbing motion )as this is more natural and decreases the chances of the food being inhaled.

  Feed until the crop is full or nicely rounded or until the chick refuses to eat any more. Do not overfeed as regurgitation may occur.

  Clean and sanitize equipment after each use. Clean any spilled food from the chick and change bedding after each feed. Good hygiene is critical for a baby birds health.

  Mix Kaytee formula with hot water and allow the mixture to cool to 40 degrees Celsius.
